Trembling Blue Stars - “Alive to Every Smile” - Subpop Records 2001

With anti-paeans sure to ring true for anyone with a failed relationship under their belt, Trembling Blue Stars finds a niche somewhere between chamber pop, indie rock and electronica. Bob Wratten’s musical tribute to his ex and former bandmate (Annemari Davies) showcases painfully beautiful songs, almost guiltily satisfying to listen to.

The nervously jarring first song “Under Lock and Key,” seems like an awkward introduction to an otherwise stunning album. Aside from that sudden sonic shift, the remaining songs float along on ambrosial instrumentation and sincere sentiments. Lyrics like “So we’ll just be the greatest couple that never was” (from “Ammunition”) certainly fit into the aforementioned category, buoyed by waves of serene music. Other standout songs include “St Paul’s Cathedral at Night,” “Haunted Days,” and “The Ghost of an Unkissed Kiss.”

One can’t help but think that Richard and Karen Carpenter could find symbiotic coexistence with these modern-day cousins from across the sea. Perhaps it is the relevance of Wratten’s heartaches; perhaps it is the enchanting combination of airy vocals, unblemished guitars and carefully placed keyboards. Whatever the reasons, Trembling Blue Stars is as comfortable as a feather pillow on a loveless night.
