Rand-Univac - The Sounds of Rand-Univac - DIY 2002

Rand-Univac - a smart indie-rock number hailing from the great city of Spokane, WA - has structured itself like most rock bands. In a line-up of separate elements, the guitar, bass, drums and vocals might not be groundbreaking. However, without dismissing them, a closer look at the combined effect reveals something that fleshes out quit perfunctorily.

The piece de resistance on this little home-cooked number - recorded in Seattle - is the systematically derived apex of separate influences. Rand-Univac (which until recently was one of the many bands called Madison) delivers clever time changes, and driving guitar rhythms, rat-tat-tat drums, rumbling bass lines and occasionally the kitchen sink. Jazz, classic rock, and indie/math rock converge in a zesty melee. One of the lower points is the detrimentally repetitive “Dream #2" which just is a bit tedious. However, the cunning “So”makes better use of recurring musical patterns and provides an effective overall feeling. The floating and airy charm of “Everyday Ordinary” and “Wandering Selkie” guarantee sure-fire favorites. “State of Disillusion” also carries the torch admirably, deftly turning up fierce percussion amidst intense guitars. Rand-Univac proves that there is unity in the hodgepodge, and it’s quite likeable.
