Synaesthesia is a psychological phenomenon where characteristics are ascribed interchangeably by various senses. A synaesthete might feel sharp pain when smelling something, or see color when hearing a sound. Lacking true synesthetic insight, my best guess is that this is a hot pink album. Not only is the disc surface is the hue of a blooming fuchsia, but color saturates the music. Heather Duby and the ensemble group, Elemental, create a chromatic interchange between magenta and orange, accented by the rhythmic black concentric circles of breakbeat, drum and bass. Frantic tempos fused with Duby’s sultry femininity function beautifully on the first three segments. The last two tracks, sans femme, saunter up Electronica Alley, with deft turntable work by Diskyze, drumming, samples and random instrumentation by Skerik, Davis Martin, Josh Warren and Reggie Watts. When Elemental move alone on the dance floor they do well, but without the power of Duby’s singing, there is less of that colorful magic that is present in the union of all parts. Nevertheless, the experimental and highly energetic nature of Heather Duby Elemental stacks up highly as a worthwhile addition to the collection of electronica afficionados.
